"The Centre was established in 1971 to undertake research activities in the areas of glass and ceramics, polymers, semiconductor, allied materials and composites. The development of know-how and manufacturing technologies of many strategic and advanced materials like Opto-electronic Materials and Devices, Semiconductor Lasers, Polymer Blends etc were taken up by the centre. With state-of-the-art infrastructure the centre conducts major sponsored research projects and has developed a range of products today and applications, including Ferromagnetic insulator cermets for Telecom Equipment, Alumina composites, Drag Resistant Polymers for Sprinkler Irrigation Systems, Ceramic Components by Gel Casting, Synthesis of Nano sized Nonoxide Ceramic Powders."??

It is a privilege to lead the Materials Science Centre in this Golden Jubilee year. As one of the first academic programs in the country exclusively set up as an interdisciplinary program in Materials Science back in 1971, we have the responsibility of being torch bearers in this field. While the study of materials is as old as mankind itself, the emergence of Materials Science as a distinct discipline globally can be traced back to the 1960s. Thus, the Materials Science Centre at IIT Kharagpur has the distinction of being one of the earliest separate Materials Science programs globally. We are 50 years young and have many more milestones to achieve. With the excellent team of faculty that we have and standing on the shoulders of our senior colleagues, we can achieve these milestones in the years to come. If you would like to know more about our Centre or our activities and academic programs as well as future plans, feel free to get in touch with me.
