The institute ranked 5th in Engineering, 6th in Law and 12th in the Management discipline. IIT Kharagpur is placed 5th as a Research Institution. IIT Kharagpur ranked 5th in India as per the QS Asia University Rankings 2023 and also managed to increase its position and achieve the place of 270 in QS World University Rankings 2023 and 60 in Asian University Rankings 2022. The premier institute overall ranked 61st in Southern Asia among its global peers. IIT KGP has been named as one of the world’s top 100 universities for the study of 19 subjects, according to the latest edition of the world’s highest QS University ranking. The institute ranked 37th in Mineral & Mining Engineering & 80th rank in Electrical & Electronic Engineering. In Engineering & Technology, it ranked 101st in the world and 3rd in India, as per the 12th QS World University Rankings by Subject, 2022. Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kharagpur has been conferred the prestigious Infosys Prize 2022 in Engineering & Computer Science for his exceptional contributions and pioneering work in elucidating the interaction of fluid mechanics, interfacial phenomena, and electro mechanics at micro and nanoscale. iMediXcare Telemedicine System, the brainchild of Prof. Jayanta Mukhopadhyay, Dean Outreach, IIT Kharagpur, has been awarded as the High Potential Innovation by International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS). It is an international organization of Engineering and Technological Sciences Academies with member academies all over the world, which fosters advancing engineering and technological sciences in order to promote economic growth, sustainable development and societal well-being. Prof. Mukhopadhyay has also featured in the list of Top 2% scientists in the world by Stanford University Rankings 2022 along with many prolific professors of IIT Kharagpur released by Stanford University Rankings 2022. Their consistency in academic pursuits is what has transferred into excellence. Prof. Joy Sen, Chairman, Centre of Excellence for Indian Knowledge Systems, IIT Kharagpur has been nominated as a Member of the Society of National Council of Science Museum (NCSM) for a period of 4 years by the Hon'ble Minister of Culture & President of NCSM. The Member of the Honorary Design Committee of IKS galleries in the New Parliament Building Complex Works under the Ministry of Culture, New Delhi, has also been roped in as a Columnist for the Dainik Bhaskar hindi newspaper on the most coveted theme, “Dharm Ka Vigyaan.” Prof. Sen has been instrumental in the abstraction of the Durga Puja 2022 Creative Economy study jointly conducted by the British Council, IIT Kharagpur & Queen Mary University, UK. Prof Abhijit Mukherjee, Department of Geology and Geophysics, IIT Kharagpur has been listed in "75 UNDER 50: Scientists Shaping Today's India", by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. It is a compilation of biographies of 75 Indian scientists across disciplines, who are less than 50 years of age. He has also been one of the primary contributing authors of the United Nations World Water Development Report 2022 (WWDR2022). It is the first UN report on groundwater titled, “Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible" which was unveiled at the World Water Forum in Dakar, Senegal. Prof. D.K. Pratihar, Department of Mechanical Engineering has received the prestigious IEEE India Council Award - "Technologist of the Year", for his contributions to the fundamentals and applications of AI. Prof. Pradip Kumar Chakraborty, Department of Chemistry, has been selected for the DAAD-DST Indo-German Joint Research Collaborative Grant 2021 in collaboration with Prof. Birgit Weber, University of Bayreuth, Germany. Dr Subhamoy Mandal, an Assistant Professor in the School of Medical Science and Technology (SMST) has been selected for the prestigious honorary position of ‘DAAD Research Ambassador’ for a tenure of 3 years. Prof Samit Kumar Ray, Professor, Department of Physics has been selected under the INAE Chair Professorship scheme. Prof. Kiran Ramakant Gore, Department of Chemistry has been selected as a Research Ambassador at DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) for the period of 3 years. Prof. Manish A. Mamtani, Department of Geology and Geophysics has been appointed as the President of the International Association for Structural Geology and Tectonics (IASGT). The IASGT has a total of 30 Executive Board members from all over the world. Many of the faculty members are members of prestigious international societies and are members in the editorial board of reputed journals. Several of the students have been rewarded with national-level awards like GYTI. It also instituted India’s first-of-its-kind scholarship entitled Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Full Scholarship for Top 100 JEE (Advanced) Rankers.
IIT KGP is also engaged with several corporate houses in driving social innovation projects supported by the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund. The institute has made significant contributions to community welfare in the fields of Education and Outreach, Affordable healthcare, Clean drinking water, Food and Nutrition, Rural Development, Sustainable Livelihood, and Environmental Sustainability among several others. The projects include the design and development of electric pick-up trucks, a smartphone app for the detection of microbes, a smartphone app for the detection of fake currency, science and heritage projects on the Indus Valley civilization and classical arts, Biogas plants, fortified food grains, application of Internet of things (IoT) in agriculture, application of Block-chain in healthcare, start-up support incubates in the Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Park (STEP). DESHLA, the indigenously built three-wheeler electric vehicle has received CSR funding from IDBI Trusteeship for developing lightweight parts for the vehicle.
In line with the Government of India’s policy to internationalize and globalize the IIT brand and promote the quality of Indian education globally, IIT Kharagpur will align and collaborate with the University of Cyberjaya which will act as a host and local partner to establish IIT Malaysia. This important step will help IIT Kharagpur to establish a global footprint in the domain of international Higher Education, following universal standards of education. This year a total number of 46 international students have been inducted into the IIT Kharagpur curriculum. Various MoUs have been signed with prestigious foreign universities including with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), The University of Warwick (WMG), Purdue University, National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), the University of Torino on institutional collaborations & academic exchanges. A Letter of Intent was signed by IIT Kharagpur with the Technical University of Munich (TUM) on the Indo-German Collaborative Research Centre of Intelligent Transportation Systems (IGCRCoITS) at IIT Kharagpur. The collaborative Research & Development (R&D) between both institutions will emphasize the main areas of intelligent transportation enhancing Electric Mobility Systems including automobiles, rail, marine craft, UAVs, etc. The institute jointly organized an online certification course in Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence with Virginia Tech, United States. The course will be spanning over nine months and is for both students and industry executives across the world. About 100 applicants would be selected based on their academic background and working experience. This collaboration is a step towards addressing the challenges of intelligent computation and interpretation of data, produced at the rate of 2.5 quintillion bytes every day. In addition to this, the British Council Going Global Summer School is being hosted jointly by the University of Edinburgh and IIT Kharagpur.
Several international and national mission projects and collaborations ranking significantly in research output have been initiated. The institution have executed many opportunities of collaborations and academic exchanges with eminent institutes and organizations like National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) for a holistic approach towards Formation and Promotion of Farmer Producer Organisation; African-Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO) on the grounds of rural development; Research For Resurgence Foundation (RFRF) in the field of research excellence; Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth under the World Bank and ICAR on Digital Farming Solutions; Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society (ORMAS) to facilitate rural technological innovation; BEML for developing New Defence Indigenous Technology for Atmanirbhar Bharat; NABARD for incubating 125 entrepreneurs in next 5 years etc. Prominent national collaborators like DRDL, DEBEL, Indian Railways, MTRDC, John Deere, Secure meters, L&T, BHEL, RFI, etc. are also enlisted with IIT Kharagpur.
IIT Kharagpur have compiled 75 of its unique innovations to mark the 75 years of Indian independence. Innovations like Covirap, iMedex tele medicine system, Deekshak e-classroom software, AI based system monitoring social distancing, Ultra High Corrosion Resistant Stainless Steel for Indian Space, Painless Needle, Cell patterning, 2G Ethanol, AI based low-cost meteorological inspection system, Robotic systems to detect and treat plant disease, novel technique to trace ancient seasons and climate change etc. has propelled the Institute among its global peers. NEP 2020 is the basis of a vibrant democratic society for the public education system that expertise in socially relevant areas addressing resource utilization. It stands on five main pillars of Enhancement of Capacity, Accessibility, Quality, Fairness and Accountability.
Every year the faculties and students come up with innovative research findings in convergence with research, technology and industry for readymade products at hand. The Institute intends to collaborate with tech giants to build Technology Research Parks engaging people more effectively and establish Lab to Market products. Several cross-disciplinary research collaboration and research endeavours have been recognized to highlight the importance of modernization in infrastructure and experimental facilities. Seven niche areas comprising of Advanced Manufacturing Systems for Industry 4.0, Safety Engineering & Analytics, Quality and Reliability, Healthcare, Precision Agriculture & Food Nutrition, Smart Infrastructure and Advanced Transportation have been identified by the Institute that will drive its growth trajectory to become the top 10 universities in the world. Advance developments in Cybersecurity, Quality of services analyses in Cloud Computing, Big Data Analytics for Water Sustainability, Virtual accident modelling, wastewater engineering, status of climate change-induced agricultural droughts across India, Next-Gen wireless communication human physiology, in-silica disease models, SMART environment & SMART transportation like multimodal input based smart wheelchair system, Indigenous development and commercialization of advanced lightweight and efficient powertrain for electric 3-wheelers stimulates the progress ahead as an Institution.

Azadi-ka-Amrit Mahotsav is a yearlong celebration (2021-22) of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The Centre of Excellence for Indian Knowledge Systems (CoE-IKS) will celebrate a yearlong program with Partha Ghosh Academy of Leadership and others like the Nehru Museum of Science & Technology, and The Reiki Centre of Excellence on the Science of happiness. It will be a precursor to the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of IIT Kharagpur from 2021 -23, and is based on the theme: 'A PARADIGM EXPANSION: from Indian Knowledge Systems to Holistic Leadership.
