Industrial and Systems Engineering
Prof. Manoj Kumar Tiwari’s (FNASc, FNAE, FIISE) research interests focus on decision support models, planning, scheduling and control problems of manufacturing system, supply chain network. He carried out thorough research in the domain of operations research and simulation model for decision making in manufacturing and supply chain. Since 1993, Prof. Tiwari developed a unique method of blending research and teaching by involving under graduate students. Well-defined problems with new algorithms and actions plans are given to a group of under graduate students and then complete research paper with intensive validation and comparison with existing methods. After several iterations, such work would have been converted into very good research papers. Such an effort let to intensive training of students in terms of model formulation, algorithm selection and coding carried out by students. Total numbers of 75 under graduate students had joined MS and PhD programmes in several reputed universities in US, UK, Canada, France, etc. with full funding. Among them, more than 20 are holding faculty position in universities like Sunny Buffalo, Loughborough, Cardiff, Bristol, Newcastle, and IITs and IIMs in India. Remaining students have joined well-known corporate houses like Apple, Microsoft, Google, Caterpillar, American Express, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan. He has published 9 book chapters and more than 314 international journal papers and collectively received 16000 plus paper citations. He has also been closely working with industries and served as Principal Investigator and co-PI of research projects funded by ministry of human resource department (MHRD), Government of India. He led various research projects funded by European Union (EU), Ministry of Human Resource Department (MHRD), Dhamra Port Company Limited, Procter and Gamble India, TATA Hitachi. The decision support systems and technologies developed by his research group have been implemented in production and logistics systems of several enterprises with significant economic impacts.
